Artist Statement

My practice is rooted in an exploration of our relationship with nature. It draws on themes from traditional landscape photography, ecology, biodiversity, the Anthropocene, climate sciences, psychological response to the environment, health, illness, and reconciliation. My goal is to use various forms of photography as a visual methodologic pluralism to provide a space for reflection on the imbalance humans have with the natural world. My work includes abstractions, interrupted landscapes, resource exploitation, and a focus on the welfare of non-human and non-living things. Repeating imagery of some subjects echoes back to my training in science, as I leverage repetition and experimentation to help convey my experience witnessing these places and things.

I use a traditional large format 8x10 view camera, infrared photography, digital cameras, and drone photography to create bodies of work that explore the complex facets of our interactions. I enjoy visiting places that are difficult to access or that function outside of our routine gaze as a way of both subverting the invisibility of our infrastructures and elevating awareness for things unseen . The Earth is sublime and beautiful, yet we challenge it. My art addresses both sides of the sometimes healthy and sometimes toxic relationship humans and nature negotiate as we consider a reconciliatory posture for our greater good.
